Indonesian Students Achieve Seven Medals at IESO 2017
The Indonesian student team won seven medals at the 11th International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO) event held at the Center International de Valbonne, Cote d'Azur, France. Four Indonesian high school delegates brought the award of one gold, four silver and two bronze. The alumni of the National Science Olympiad (OSN) program of the Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud) brought a gold medal on behalf of Rifki Andika (SMA Negeri 2 Depok) and one silver medal in the name of Francis L Santoso (SMA Kristen Ketapang, Jakarta) from Earth System Project (ESP) competition. Then from the International Team Field Investigation (ITFI) competition, one silver medal was won on behalf of Rifki Andika. Two silver medals for individual competitions were returned by Rifki Andika and Francis L. Santoso. In addition, Indonesia also received two bronze medals on behalf of Alse Nabilah (SMA Kesatuan Bangsa, Jogjakarta) and Fadly Aulia (SMA Al Kautsar, Bandar Lampung).
The 11th IESO was held on 22-29 August 2017, participated by 29 participating countries and 5 observer countries. As a competition for pre-college students for Earth Science, IESO encompasses knowledge competitions on geosphere (geology and geophysics), hydrosphere (hydrology and oceanography), atmosphere (meteorology and climatology) and astronomy.
The outstanding students who represented Indonesia at the 11th IESO were accompanied by four coaches namely Zadrach L. Dupe (Meteorology ITB), Judge L. Malasan (Astronomy ITB), Warsito Atmodjo (Prodi Oseanografi UNDIP) and Asep Sukmayadi (Kemendikbud) . Previously they undergo training and selection through four stages of coaching in Yogyakarta and Bandung for a total of three months in late 2016 and early 2017. (Kemendikbud / IK-SS)
